What is the meaning of life? Jesus, funnily enough, gives us a direct answer today. We might be surprised that God does this: surely life is far more complicated and complex than this? But no: often life is complicated because we ourselves make it complex because of our obsession with ourselves and our pride and our selfishness and impatience. But really, life is so beautiful, and so simple. And this is what Jesus tells us today: ‘Which is the first of all the commandments?’ Jesus replied, ‘This is the first: Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the one Lord, and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You must love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.’ Do I do that? Many of our contemporaries, and even ourselves, are looking for the guide for how we can make the best decisions. This is how. If we make decisions in line with this, we will make pretty good decisions, even when the situation is difficult. Let us in this Eucharist ask God to help us do that today – help us to be ourselves, to help us make our decisions alone these lines.
