and you too have been stamped with the seal of the Holy Spirit of the Promise,
the pledge of our inheritance
which brings freedom for those whom God has taken for his own, to make his glory praised.
When I was a teacher I knew a Catholic who said that he loved God so much that he wanted to get a big cross tattooed across his chest to stop him from ever sinning again. What do you think I said?
I said two things:- that it wouldn’t stop him from sinning again – it would work for a while, and then he’d get used to it; and that in any case he already had a tatoo – a much more powerful one, on his heart, because that’s what God does at baptism and confirmation: he puts his tattoo, his seal, on our hearts. This is more powerful than an ordinary tattoo:- because it cannot be removed; and because this tattoo, as we heard, is a person: stamped with the seal of the Holy Spirit. So there is a person there all the time, whether I am happy or sad or finding things hard, who I can turn to for help and company and to reheat my love.
