Why does Jesus call us hypocrites? It’s because on the one hand we act with common sense, and when we see a cloud coming we say “It’s going to rain.” and we prepare for it: we take our umbrella, take the washing off the line. There’s no problem with this of course : Jesus accuses us of hypocrisy though because when we see people dying all around us, we don’t do the same thing: to prepare for death, or where we will be after death. Instead, we simply assume everyone goes to heaven because God is love. But that’s not what Jesus tells us today: try to settle with him on the way, or he may drag you before the judge and the judge hand you over to the bailiff and the bailiff have you thrown into prison. I tell you, you will not get out till you have paid the very last penny.’
Jesus is not being mean and nasty: he is saying to us hurry up, and change your life because if I – perfect Truth and Love – am not your priority in this life, I will certainly not be in the next, where you will never escape from your self-centredness. Let’s ask Jesus to help us today: to urgently change our hearts to seek only to serve him and all those around us, to only do good things, and stop wasting our energy doing evil. Amen.
